- This Autumn Killegar Estate once again invites old and new friends to the 4th annual International Mushroom Festival on October 11th and 12th 2014, set in Leitrim’s lakelands, only two hours and as many centuries from Dublin. Forest foragers, gardeners, leading researchers and serious foodies come to explore and enjoy 400 acres of ancient, beautiful and ecologically diverse native woodlands.
This is the event to make your Autumn truly golden. Apart from learning which of our wild mushrooms are poisonous and which are safe to eat, you can attend fascinating wildlife talks or expertly guided forest tours, gourmet cookery demos or take a peek at Irish social history from inside one of the last remaining family-occupied ‘Big Houses’.
Get some tips on how to incorporate natural features (birds, insects, Irish wildflowers, bees and fungi) into your garden at Carl Wright’s (Caher Bridge Garden) ‘Wild About My Garden’ talk. Expand your knowledge of outdoor photography at our ‘Wildlife Workshop’ and enter our photography competition.
You can warm up with a mug of wild mushroom soup or chill out in our Tea Rooms over a hot cup of tea and homemade scones while the kids are being happily detoxed from the techno-world in the OWLS (Outdoor, Wildlife, Learning & Survival) Nature Club.
